More than 100 pro-lifers in downtown South Bend demonstrated against abortion coverage in the proposed health care legislation. The July 23 event was sponsored by St. Joseph County Right to Life and coordinated by RTL member Tom Uebbing. Health care legislation is the most critical issue facing right-to-lifers as it would force all taxpayers to pay for abortions with their tax dollars. Proponents of the bill point to the fact that abortion is not even mentioned in the bill, but that is exactly why it will be covered. To ensure that abortion will not be included in the coverage, it must be clearly excluded in the bill.
It is important to realize that SJCRTL is not opposed to health care reform. But we must all work to prevent a bill that will force us to pay for unlimited abortions. According to the Alan Guttmacher Institute, including abortion in a health care plan would increase the number of abortions in the US by 250,000 to 400,000 each year. The current bill would also force hospitals, doctors, nurses, and other health care professionals to participate in abortions against their will. If this bill passes in its current form, it would result in the greatest expansion of abortion since Roe v. Wade.
Please contact your US Congressman and Senators today. Ask them to vote against any bill that does not explicitly exclude abortion coverage. For legislator contact information, click here.
