Again in a Heartbeat...
Churches have always been a powerful force for good at the heart of the pro-life movement. Following Roe v. Wade, the need for pastors to speak Truth regarding our most precious gift of life is stronger than ever. In their positions, pastors and faith leaders have a unique opportunity to impact their congregations, helping them to understand the sanctity of life, to shape their actions accordingly, and to go out and exhort others to do the same.

With this ideal in mind, the Right to Life team is revamping its church outreach efforts with the sincere hope of helping congregations become more pro-life, and we believe the first step to doing so is listening.

Over the past several weeks, the Right to Life team has been sitting down with pastors, faith leaders, and church liaisons for a series of honest conversations. In these discussions, we are soaking in the unique understanding of each individual with whom we speak. Because of these conversations, we are grasping the nuances of each congregation with an eye toward how we can better use our resources to provide ultra-tailored support.

The insights shared with us have been greatly impactful.

One pastor, unabashed in his desire to help his congregation pursue Truth in all things, shared just how important it is to speak Truth without apology. He recounted how, several years ago, he preached a series on relevant moral issues. As a result, 40% of his congregation left his church. And his response, looking back? “I would do it again in a heartbeat.”

You see, this pastor recognizes that in order to follow Jesus, we must work to place our actions in right order. He sees that watering down Truth would actually be a disservice to members of his congregation in their pursuit to do so.

To those pastors who shy away from addressing the topic of abortion with their congregations out of fear that they might turn away a post-abortive individual, he highlighted the need to help them seek forgiveness, mercy, and healing from their past. In his words, “All one needs to say is, ‘if you or someone you love has had an abortion, we welcome you here and we invite you to seek healing in Jesus. We will never say that the act was right, but we love you and believe that forgiveness is here for you.’”

Our conversation with this pastor and the strong witness he shared with us yielded pages of practical tips that have helped us understand how we can encourage other pastors and faith leaders to work through their hesitations when it comes to preaching about the life issues.

As a result of this conversation and others, we are developing new tools to help pastors rise to meet the opportunity before them. In sharing truth boldly, pastors have the potential to reach pew after pew, changing the hearts and minds of those in their flock to recognize and uphold the sanctity of all innocent human life and to act accordingly.
